National Beginnings

Founded in 1950 as the Federal Government Accountants Association, AGA was created to unite financial professionals dedicated to promoting accountability, ethics, and knowledge sharing in government finance. In 1975, the organization expanded to include state and local financial managers, and in 2022 it rebranded as AGA to reflect a broader range of roles, including auditing, compliance, risk, and data analytics. AGA has led the profession through initiatives such as the Certified Government Financial Manager® (CGFM®) certification and Citizen-Centric Reporting, fostering transparency and excellence across all levels of government.

Professional Leadership & Resources

AGA provides year-round learning and development opportunities through continuing education, national events, and over 90 local chapters, offering networking, training, and community engagement. Its publications, research, and advocacy efforts contribute to thought leadership and innovation in government financial management. Through these programs, AGA helps professionals enhance performance, uphold integrity, and implement best practices that strengthen public trust and accountability.
